Sustainable Bond Relief Program
In March 2013, Burbank USD passed their Measure S bond to improve classrooms and provide ongoing district facility upgrades. In order to fill the gap between the existing bond funding and the needed costs for critical improvements related to classroom size reduction standards, ENGIE Services U.S. Inc. ("ENGIE") partnered with Burbank USD to implement infrastructure upgrades that would provide an additional revenue stream through energy savings and renewable generation. Over the life of the comprehensive program, Burbank USD will save $10.4 million in energy costs. Some major highlights of the partnership to date include: • STEM internships for graduating seniors to shadow ENGIE engineers in the field • Teacher Professional Development: Training sessions focused on NGSS Sustainable and Energy Standards and Common Core • Renewable generation: 742 kW total of solar PV on parking lot and student shade structures and rooftops installed across eight sites • Water conservation: Converting all irrigation systems to recycled water, saving the region an estimated 26,000,000 gallons in potable water each year— enough to service nearly 200 homes annually Facility performance: • New and upgraded AC systems and ventilation systems in gymnasiums, auditoriums and classrooms • Improved interior and exterior LED lighting system upgrade with controls • Upgrades to PA systems and life safety systems Over a short implementation period starting in early 2016, ENGIE has helped BUSD free up bond dollars to be reallocated to underfunded bond initiatives, such as additional classrooms and 21st century technology upgrades, ensuring that the District would be able to fund a comprehensive program with no additional costs. Under the program, more than $3,000,000 of funding will be secured from The Clean Energy Jobs Act (Prop 39) and Burbank Water & Power efficiency rebates.
